Story of a legend “Aswang” in the Philippines

”Maria Labo” Old story: Here is a common version of the Legend of the “Aswang”:

Maria Labo is from the province of Capiz. Maria Labo have a happy family she had a kind  and loving husband and one son. Maria Labo was decide working abroad in England, for the sake of her family.

She had a good employer, who treated her well, but she did not know that here employer was a vampire. In the months she was employed, Maria was a combination maid and care giver to here employer. The employer of Maria would always provide her with half-cooked liver to eat.

After months of working for him, Maria began to feel sick. She did not know that she had ingested some blood of her vampire employer. Due to her unkown illness, Maria decided to return home to the Philippines, to live with her family.

The husband of Maria was a police officer. One day, after the husband returned home from work, Maria told her husband that she had already prepared dinner. Upon which time the husband of Maria sat down to the table and asked Maria, “Where is our son?“. To which Maria replied, “Our son is right there!“. The husband of Maria did not know what she meant. He was unaware that the meat he had eaten that day, was in fact their son!

Upon opening the refrigerator box, he was shocked to see the head of their son in the refrigerator. The husband of Maria was so angry, he picked up a big knife and slashed the face of Maria. Maria had big scar on her face, which is why she was called ”Maria Labo”.

From that day on, Maria would stalk or hunt in many different locations within the Philippines, but her husband continued to hunt for Maria because he wanted to kill her. Whenever Maria was known to be in any place within the Philippines, all or the people tried to find and kill her, to save their own children. From those days till the present, the Filipino people gave Maria the nickname of the “Aswang”, meaning Queen of the Vampires.

OLD BELIEFS

To this day, when Filipinos attend Fiestas in their province, they will not eat Dinuguan or Bofia or Atay (Liver). Or if they choose to eat, they will first put calamansi juice on the meat because it is believed you can see the true texture of the meat. They believe that the “Aswang” may trick them into eating Aswang or human blood and apply calamansi juice to the meat first so that they cannot be tricked, as Maria Lobo was by her vampire employer did to her. *Another belief is that if you look directly into the eyes of the vampire, and they will not look directly back into your eyes, that the individual may be an aswang.

aswang afraid in tail of pagi

aswang is also afraid of, and/or avoids calamansi, the case of a bullet, salt (asin), garlic (bawang), charcoal (uling), coconut stick (buko) or walis ting ting (bamboo broom).

It is also said that the Aswang is afraid of oil from the province. That they have use leaves and some natural woods that scare the aswang. If you use the oil you will see and know that they have Aswang in their place because the oil will boil right in the bottle.

    • Thanks for your comment. The legend of the “aswang” is known throughout all of the Philippine Islands, however it inception and the legend itself may vary from province to province or island to island.

          • Syempre! Legends are Legends. Does Santa exist? A legend lives as long as it is held in the hearts and minds of the people who believe in it, or who pass it on to others. Some call them “folktales”. Now, what do you believe? :)

        • Salamat for your input on how they handle Aswang in Bicol. I must make a joke and say, do you ONLY boil the tubig, or since it is in Bicol, do you also boil coconut milk? (I have been to Bicol and they cook so much using coconut milk), Bicol Express… Ano Bayan!

  1. is it true that maria labo live in capiz? because in some story that I’ve read, maria labo is from davao city.

  2. an aswang is an aswang the vampires on the other half are diferent from the aswangs, aswangs are said to be gods nights and gods of the moon.
come on dude your such a lousy researcher.

I was abducted by that creature when I was a little boy but I could still remember everything.

  3. Marami talaga kwento sa aswang. At first I did not believe such stories even my parents when I ask them they said that if I believe in that the more evil will exist. But back in the past when my parents still active in their Butching business. Their was this encounter that wakes me up at 3 o’clock am. They start the Butching at early 3 o’clock because they should deliver the meat at exactly 6 o’clock to their costumers. Strange sounds I heard at that night, sounds like angy animal above the mango tree lurking around our house. The reason is that the two helper of my Tatay made joke when the two aswang pass by in the bahay kubo outside our house.

  8. Guys, I have personal experience on this dark creature. If you will encounter them. Let me share this information especially if you have a pregnant wife, small children and infant in the house.

    1. Be vigilant in the night.. (NO sleeping 6pm – 3am)

    2. Make it to a point to have a man in the house (Husband, Father in law, Uncle, Brothers, Friends)… 2 men are better.

    3. In number 2 , stated 2 men.

Incase the sound of tiktik appears, and a member of the house have encountered inconveniences ( crying of small children / infants). men.. they must go out in the house and make a guard round to surround the house. (Let them know that this is your territory and ready to protect your family at all cost)… But make sure you armed yourself.

    4. Light all dark areas in the surrounding. (Take-away stealth ability)

    5. Cut / untrimmed trees in your surrounding. (Take-away hiding places)

    6. SALT – Drive away bad element, throw salt above your roof and windows.

    7. INSENSO – Burn it to drive away bad element.

    ( Apply it as needed)

    8. Holy water – Apply to them to windows and doors.

    9. Luya

    10. Lana (Mystical Oil)

    11. PRAY

  9. I was currently sitting at a bamboo chair here in our salas when i curiously google the word aswang as i had this weird, totally unexplainable expriences the past few days. I am 6 month pregnant and i definitely do not have any idea ’bout certain beliefs that a pregnant woman should be aware of. The past days were tolerable. I used to hear sounds like “kikik” “kikik” or “psssttt” “pssst” as if sounds like a bird and seems like peeping in my bedroom’s window. And then there is this crazy sound as if a super big creature was flying around the house. Until last night rigjt after i closed the main door around 10pm when i and my maid heard a loud “blag” right next to the door and if i am to describe it its like “golem” of lord
of the rings doing like spiderman thing and was on its way crawling at the middle of the wall to the right until it stops after the first window. We got so scared so we called for a police officer but they found nothing. Early this morning we checked on the wall and found
    footprints.. Crazy footprints…
Itlooks like a footprint of a 7yr old kid but only has 3 toe nailprints and a scratch marks at the wall with only claws. The footprints were at the wall though. In fact i took pictures of it to figure out what kind of creature would it be. Its rely weird this kind of incidents still happens in a subdivision here in masbate city

    • Bulingkitay.. i think you should be really careful. Dont go outside after 5pm . You should always have bawang asin buntot pagi holy water and the oil that boils when the aswang is near . Always lock everything even the window used dark curtains in your house.. always have a light on your room.PRAY! and pls. Gustong gusto nya baby mo. Becareful!. God blessed your family!

  10. Hmm… Its seems they found a target. Those are foot soldiers of aswang… Attacks and attempt may last for days, weeks even months.. wait till the master arrived. Better look immediately for a trusted albolaryo in your area for protection and defense.

LABO- means cut/slash. eh un ung trademark sa mukha ni Maria labo. and read it LABO in a fast way,, parang SABON. Swerte namen my albularyo sa tapat ng bahay namin kaya safe kahit papano kahit my whatevers sa paligid na mumu/kapre. and nakikita namen na nanggagamot cia ng nasasapian ganun or kontra sa mangkukulam.
san ba dito nakakabili ng buntot ng pagi? magkano un? gusto ko lang magkaganun kasi protection un sa bahay. kahit lumaki ako sa city, alam ko meron talaga. kasi sa village namen nung buntis cousin ko nung 2010, my naririnig daw cia and maid nia ng tiktik sa labas ng bahay. meron akong isang cousin na guy nung Highschool cia (living in Iloilo: estancia I think and it was 7-9yrs ago), hinabol pala cia ng aswang NUNG buntis ung Ate nia! lasing cia nun at pauwi ng bahay. sabay nabuhay ung pagiisip nia at tumatakbo pauwi dahil sa aswang!
Ang alam ko na may totoong aswang din eh sa DUMANGGAS, according to my mom. pero ewan ko lang ngayon KUNG meron pa dun. pero scary daw talaga ung lugar na un. ayun. good night! :)

    • Salamat for your “modernistic” opinion. I still allow it to be posted. Free speech and all! :) But you would have doubled your readers had you been modernistic enough to write it in English! ha ha God Bless and Mabuhay!

  13. I also had a experience about aswang and ghost not only once, dati akala ko panakot lang ng parents ko yun para di ako lumabas sa gabi at matulog ng maaga. first time back in 2003 summer in Bataan.

  14. I also had experience about aswang and ghost not only once. That night di ako nakatulog at nilagnat ako. Kinabukasan kinuha ng may ari yung soot kong mga damit that night at sinunog namin na may kasamang palaspas at insenso saka ako umuwi next time na yung second po good evening…

  15. Aswang exist. I was 6 months pregnant back then.Together with my 2 younger sister and brother, we sleep in the sala of our house. I would always wake up around 2-3 am because I always hear a clicking sound by the window. I sounds like a pointed thing is being used to knock on the glass window. I decided to transfer to a different spot in our bed. I thought that the knocking would go away but to my dismay, I would still wake up in the middle of the night because of the knocking sound and this time the knocking sound seems to come from our door.
I told our helper about this, she then told me to wear my dad’s or my partner’s shirt when I go to sleep so that the aswang will not smell me.

According to legend, new born babies and pregnant women are the favorite food of the aswang. They would be able to smell them from afar.

I followed our helper’s advise and since then I was never disturbed by the knocking sound.

    • Salamat! I always appreciate emails that tend to provide more stories and input on relevant matters pertaining to the legend of aswang and other Pilipino myths and legends. You email was very informative and educational, especially when you related to wear the shirt so aswang could not smell you. God Bless and Mabuhay!
