Freddie “Anak” Aguilar vs OPM?

FREDDIE “Anak” AGUILAR vs. OPM?

Always loved, yet often forgotten:..

Example: On January 12, 2012, Yahoo News Philippines (The Inbox Blog) rightfully shared and reported:

63-year-old pianist puts up impromptu ‘concert’ for train commuters

“Perhaps as a testament to British award-winning author Neil Gaiman’s tweet on Friday that it is indeed more fun in the Philippines since Filipinos applaud loudly, at least 300 commuters alternately took delight in the impromptu “concert” of pianist performer Vidalito Infante in a music retail stall at the Cubao Station from 4 to 6 p.m.

On his way to take the LRT ride in Cubao, (Vidalito) Infante said he could not resist the sight of the Wilhelm upright piano that was on display for sale, and started to play some of his favorite songs that included the classic hit Fly Me to the Moon and the popular OPM song Anak. Infante, or Mang Bong, as he prefers to be called, plays the piano at the Rockwell Mall in Makati every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.”

Lest we forget that it is truly FREDDIE AGUILAR’S “Anak“, not OPM’s? (OPM is abbreviation for “Original Pinoy Music”, as well as a corporate name this article is focused on the “commercial” OPM). Sure, whenever we ride the Jeepneys and Busses throughout the Philippines, we enjoy and appreciate the usually upbeat OPM renditions of popular music, but let us not forget the genius behind the music itself. The artist, who, in this case, is the Philippine’s own FREDDIE AGUILAR. Pianist Vidalito did just that, and amongst the many great and classic music pieces from around the world and throughout history, he also included Freddie’s, “Anak”. This is what Yahoo! Philippines failed to emphasize.  Perhaps this is why our musical “legands” seem to fade out so much quicker than they used to. Yes, I said “legend”, for Freddie Aguilar is truly a living legend.  I for one, have always tried to enjoy at least one of his shows every time I visit the Philippines.  Whether at the Hobbit House, LA Cafe, or Freddie’s own:

Playing devil’s advocate, I myself do not know of any parent, grandparent or guardian who has not shed a tear, or felt their heartstrings when hearing Freddies “Anak” masterpiece.

I know that Freddie would just be proud to think that his masterpiece is often thought of as simply one of the most beautiful and heart piercing song creations to ever bless the Tagalog language, and that “Anak: is simply the property (by way of his creative gift), of the Pilipino* People, for generations to come.

* Note that “Pilipino” and “Pinoy” is proper spelling in Tagalog for “Filipino”.
